From The Book of Questions by Gregory Stock.

Question #105: At a meal, your friends start belittling a common acquaintance. If you felt their criticisms were unjustified, would you defend the person?

Probably so, but I don't think most of my friends would do that.

Yeah. Even if I wouldn't fight to the death over it, I'm going to defend someone even to other friends. O.o At least try to put in a good word, show that it's not just a single perspective and they can at least try to take the full story into account.

Oh, look.... my filter from my brain to my mouth is faulty. Oops. Guess I'm sniping at my friends and getting upset with them over it. Because really? You lot are normally a lot better than this, so why are you ganging on this person and being harsh now? It's probably not defending the person, so much as disappointment in my friends... But I'd still question and fight them about it.

Yes, but also I don't think I could be friends with someone who did that.

I would most certainly defend them if they were too shy or passive to do it themselves.

I'd call them out on it

Yeah, I've done that before. I've lost friends that way, too. I don't regret it; if they're willing to do that to someone else, then they're probably willing to do it to me. And I don't need friends like that.
