Fase 1
Kenmerken beginnende RSI-klachten:

Pijn en vermoeidheid tegen het einde van de werkdag of na een stressvolle periode
Duidelijke relatie tussen oorzaak en pijn
Pijn verdwijnt doorgaans na korte rustperiode (slapen, weekend of vakantie)
Vermoeidheid, krampen, tintelingen, doof gevoel, onhandigheid
Geen merkbare participatieproblemen in leven en werk
Klachten zijn met relatief eenvoudige maatregelen goed terug te dringen.

Fase 2
Kenmerken toegenomen RSI-klachten:

Klachten treden sneller op en verdwijnen minder snel
Minder duidelijke relatie tussen oorzaak en pijn
Pijn kan ook 's nachts opkomen; 's ochtends kan er lokaal stijfheid optreden
Ook bij andere activiteiten in het dagelijks leven doen zich steeds vaker klachten voor
Pijn is toegenomen, maar is moeilijk te lokaliseren, krachtverlies en 'zwaar' gevoel
Beginnende en toenemende merkbare problemen bij werken en dagelijkse bezigheden
Soms ongemerkte neiging tot vermijdend of compenserend handgebruik
Klachten zijn met uitgebreidere maatregelen en discipline terug te dringen.

Fase 3
Kenmerken RSI-syndroom:

Pijn is bijna continue aanwezig
Geen duidelijke relatie tussen het moment van pijn en de oorzaak
Slaapproblemen komen vaak voor door het wakker worden/blijven door de klachten
Klachtenpatroon en aandoeningen zijn uitgebreid over het hele gebied van bovenrug, nek en arm
Verlies van coördinatie, gevoel en kracht (waarmee uitval van de arm- en handfunctie), vermoeidheid
Werken en dagelijkse bezigheden zijn nauwelijks mogelijk
Fysieke en emotionele gevolgen zijn groot
