Merry - oh I'm not anti-magpie at all, I was just wondering why it's so overly popular.
I'm actually starting to brainstorm how I'm gonna make one, but it's hard for me to come up with something my own when I've seen other people's versions. But I'll try to use my magic to generate ideas ^_^

And gender is indeed confusing online, but that's what makes it awesome, in my opinion.

Gothic - nah I don't think it was you, I guess everyone got busy or something, and it was crowded here like 3 hours ago or more.

Split tail? Oh no Zia, that's a swallow ^_^;;
Magpies (at least the Pica kind) have a fan-like tail, one that's longer than their own body. One of my favorite parts of the whole bird. ;D
The longer the tail, the more dominant the bird.
Oh wait Wit, your Dutch, right? Surely you know eksters. ;D

Besides, Zia, they're not just black! They're black and white with a green / blue / sometimes even purplish glow. I'm starting to think you've got a whole different bird in your mind. ;D
But yeah in some cultures, mainly Asian, they bring good luck. Here in Europe on the other hand, they were once said to be bringers of bad luck. Or messengers of that bad luck, if you will. There's this old tradition that when you see one, you should take off your hat and greet him. "Good morning Mr. Magpie, how are your lovely wife and children doing today?" That should lift the bad luck. If it answered however, you were in deep shit.

There's also this cute little rhyme coming from Britain.
"One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five is for silver
Six is for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told"
It's about what the amount of magpies in a group means. And it varies between regions of Britain. ;D

Well there's many but I need to go, no time to name them all xD
I think the first and foremost reason is their beauty. For me they really are the most magnificent and elegant creatures alive. They're so confident and with a flair of arrogance - makes me a little jealous, I guess? Then there's their amazing intelligence. They're just as smart, maybe even smarter, then dolphins. They've got a perfect sense of self image which your pet cat for example doesn't have.
And here comes the more spiritual part. I'm a big fan of old traditions and stuff so I always greet them, though silently. But I did catch myself on superstition; not that I think they bring bad luck, to me they bring good luck. Whenever I'm sad or worried I look out for them and seeing one really puts me at ease. And the crazy thing is that it always turns out I've been worried for nothing. :p

Sadly it's sort of illegal here to hold one. You can't hold wild birds, only those born in captivity. But how do you get the parents?
I did see one for sale a few weeks ago but that guy didn't respond anymore. Besides, I don't know if I could take care of her. I've also just bought a canary, so I'll see how things work out with him first. :p

I do understand your obsession with them, I guess it can be compared with my love for Japan. If u can compare a bird and a country, that is XD

And there is still a long life ahead, I'm sure you'll eventually be an owner of one.

In my culture (Russian) magpies are known for their love for shiny things as there is a children's rhyme thingie about that~

You can't compare birds with countries but you can compare obsessions. However, Japan is really high on my love list as well. :p

Yeah, let's hope so, but still a magpie needs a lot of time and attention and with my future job I'm not sure if I could give it that. xD

And it's funny how they don't even steal shiny objects. They're just playful and curious and shiny things attract their attention more than other objects. They play around with it a little but they've never actually been caught stealing like that. :')

...so that's why I never liked the Tooth Fairy. On the other side of the world you've got a way better substitute. :(
