We have twelve that we got last summer. My favorites are the Cubalayas, because they have game bird ancestry, so they're teeny and much prettier than normal chickens. (They also fly extremely well.)
They are a little bit messy, but the barn is away from the house, and they have their own meadow, so as long as you don't go in the coop, it's fine xD The coop is icky though
So if you don't have much space, you definitely wouldn't want chickens. But they're really sweet. They eat out of your hands, sit on your lap, and some of them even like to be held.
