I hear that it is common for Jewish people to not speak Yiddish. But it really is a fascinating language from the historical linguistics stand-point. I can't really say much else since I don't know much else about Yiddish. I suppose Syntax is your favourite field of Linguistics? I like all the theoretic fields, but my thesis was more applied phonology.

How come you had to do an undergrad thesis? Is it also for something like honors, where you don't really have to but if you do you get extra recognition from certain academic circles?

I'll start filling in the trade when I get up. Should also add some items to useffel sales list, now that you have significantly cleared out my mule's wardrobe :qh:

@Zia: not really. you have to have a BA if you want to be recognized by any academic circles. It's the very first grade you get. You can go apply for a job with it or for the master's. It's also possible to get a job without BA, but either it will be something along the lines of washing dishes in a café, or you must have a certificate from another educational institution, not necessarily university. So BA is one of next steps a person can take after school. Other alternatives are for instance double-study where you get education in say economics and work in the field as an assistant or something at the same time. The institution is directly connected to your place if work so it's not like being a student and working, it's really a different system. You can also go to a non-academic institution and get practical education for example if you want to work in social services later or if you want to be a mechanic. University is really there to give you academic education. Though you also can get teaching education there but your grade will be something like "teaching" rather than BA. So here is you want to go into science you need a BA but it's not the only thing you can do with this degree. You can also get a job in the related field as a BA student. Like if you're studying art, you're more likely to get a job at a museum than if you have nothing to do with it.

Well Jewish people don't necessary have Yiddish as their heritage, but even those who do don't always speak it. Especially those with families from the former ussr where it was dangerous so parents preferred not to teach their children so that they don't get in trouble. The language is indeed pretty cool, thanks to it we better see the stage if language development that many have undergone but so long ago. Yes, I love syntax but it's not the field I'm best at, unfortunately. I'm much better at phonetics/phonology, graphemics and morphology. But I find syntax and pragmatics the most interesting. And while it's clear that pragmatics is not my strong point I really didn't expect syntax to be such a problem. But it turned out to be XD what I don't like at all is semantic but our university is really fangirling over it. Im just like "ok I'll just try to avoid this as much as I can" XD
