Spoiler
There is literally no test that doesn't test memorization.
There is literally no test without time limit and some kind of pressure.
Here's the thing, there are several types of intelligences, and you're not good at all of them. There are social intelligences, musical intelligences, physical, and so on and so forth. But you can't test a musical intelligence in biology. You can't test a physical intelligence in English Literature. It makes no sense. What you can test is general or detailed knowledge on the subject, which can be learnt in whatever way you want. Not everyone learns the same, that is true, but how you learn makes no difference in a standardized test as long as you learn all you need. How much you learn depends on your overall intelligence and motivation.
Explaining your thoughts is also something you can learn and should learn in class, so blame your teacher for that one.
Now, something that is not the fault of standardized tests but the american school system is the grading. Because damn that's harsh over there. 60% for a D? You should be able to pass with 50%, because maybe it's just really not your kind of subject. American grading is so unforgiving.
WHAT HAPPENED KYAN

Yeah but no penalties means no minus points for just filling out anything, and you could have something right when you just put whatever in.

What is your grading system over there? :o
My chemistry tests are without pressure. I wish all tests were like that orz
Also, back when we had CSTs, we were given more time when needed. (which I ofc took advantage of) Students of 10th grade and younger are lucky, they don't have CSTs anymore XD

Yup, so I risked the chance xD *crosses fingers*

In school we had 1-6 where you pass if you have a 4, which is 50%, or a lower number, and in higher secondary 15-0, where you pass if you have a 5, which is 50%, or a higher number. If we were to grade it with letters, you'd get a D with 50%, C from 65% and B from 80%.
And I'm not sure how the pass/fail thing is in the US, but what really counts here is what grades you have at the end of your school year. So if you fail one exam or even one class it doesn't matter as long as you were good enough in another class to compensate. Failing only starts being a problem with 3 failing grades or more.

Is that because you're good at chemistry or because you don't let yourself get pressured? Because pressure is not institutionalized lmao the school isn't supposed to be out to pressure you. And giving out a little more time is not the same as not having a time limit, unfortunately :P They do the same here with regular tests if they see that the students couldn't finish on time.

WELL GOOD FOR YOU KYAN, GLAD THAT'S THE CASE

Almost every level of education is different, here. Elementary School, grades are a lot more flexible. Junior High (Middle School) and High School 50-59% - F is a fail. 60-79% is extremely frowned upon and anything less than a 70% across the board can sometimes hold you back a grad depending on the school. College, almost every professor can decide and while the numbers are the same, it feels arbitrary as to how much you can fail before they actually fail you.

Kyan, you gonna let us in on the secret then? :mcsmirk:

PICTURES, LOTS AND LOTS OF PICTURES

Well. That's even worse. The point of a grading system is to make sure that teachers can't fail you when you should pass. Why don't you just revert back to the old pass/fail and ignore all the grades?

Yeah, especially because learning disabilities are still not very well tested, like dyslexia and ADHD etc, so kids can act out or do poorly and be failed without realizing.

Oooooh, sounds neat!

Well learning disabilities is a completely different thing. Your system sucks already for people without those disabilities, maybe you should concentrate on that.
But it's not the teacher's job to find out that the kid had ADHD or dyslexia. There is a fine line between short attention span and ADHD, and a fine line between "can't read" and dyslexia if you're a teacher and spend a minimal amount of time with that class, with no personal relationships. If you, as a parent, think your kid may have either, you should have them see a professional.
But in all honestly, dyslexia may impact your grades, but ADHD hardly does. That's mostly an attention thing, and the best way to get attention and be rid of all your extra energy in class is to spend it on your tasks. Or go running in break times.

Kyan, I can swear to you, if you had pass/fail again your schools would be even harder to pass.
