I'd have to wear it for carry-on!

And the way the States is with airports, I'd have to strip so they could make sure it's just pipe cleaners!

You check in when you first get there, they ask you if you have checked luggage, you give them your large luggage you don't want/won't fit on the plane/has stuff that isn't allowed through security, and they put it in the hold of the plane for the duration of the flight and you get a ticket to claim it when you land.

People can carry things like large bottles of shampoo, guns, etc. You can't access it during the flight so it's safe to transport things that way.
