Ha ha ha, yeah, I was so confused over them I ended up making a thread in the support forum, Starkad had to come and write out this HUGE post explaining...
So if you manually click on feed or play, you get 1 xp and a variable amount of happiness or feeding, right (10d3, between 10 and 30)?
The apples and cupcakes are reversed. They automatically feed or give happiness to a set amount (10/15) but having them give variable xp in terms of fractions (0.61 xp to 1.82 xp or something crazy like that, I haven't done the math) would be really weird, so instead they give set xp as well, rounded at 1xp per hour.
Mostly they're good for if you want to do the digging with them every day, you put on an apple and cupcake and each day you should be able to dig with them, without worrying about filling their bars back up.
