Well it's to help people who can't be playing on their phones constantly.
Like if you're talking with people and you don't want to pull your phone out.
Also for when you're driving so you don't miss stops.

I thought they retailed for $35?? Niantic said they were going to increase production of them so hopefully in a little while they won't be so scarce. I want one, too.
