It means that I like dogs more, even though I don't mind cats. And all my life it's been dogs that have offered me the most security, love and emotional comfort. Our first dog was same age as I was. He was never trained or anything, but he was acting as my guard dog like it was in his blood or something. Took it very seriously too. Always kept me safe when I was a baby to when we were both six (he was killed by another dog). The dog we have now, he's a huge support system for me as I struggle with depression among other things.

I'm sorry to hear that happened with your first dog. Surprisingly it seems to be quite a common occurrence :\ My friend's dog was also killed by another dog on her birthday of all days. I'm glad you have a lot of support from your dog. What breed is he/she?

A cat trait I do occasional enjoy is their independence especially when they're an outdoor cat. You can mostly leave them be for the day during work and you come home to cat cuddles/leg scratching to feed them haha. Their meows and purrs are the cutest.

The family dog bit me when I was little so I have a scar on my upper left arm and a residual fear of dogs that shows up when one startles me

I like dogs, I like cats, but I can't handle the additional responsibility of a dog. Might manage a cat. Their needs are more easily met.

Yeah, and it was done by a much bigger dog. I think our dog was the type who "didn't back down on assholes" basically. In other words he would fight even if he was much smaller (he was neither big nor small himself) and not back down. Unfortunately that sealed his fate. The dog we have now, is a toy poodle. Cutest thing, with the biggest personality. Acts very human, lol. And at times kind of like a cat too. And I do love that cat purring thing. There's something very soothing about it.

I actually want and need that additional responsibility. With depression I very easily can spend months without leaving the house and completely shutting down. With our dog, it forces me to get out and think about someone else's needs before mine. It also helps some.

Ah, I see. I live with a number of Elders so I have PLENTY of responsibility already, it's a matter of reaching my limit. I suppose if all of them were gone I might prefer a dog for that reason, too!

Ah, I get that. Although I think I'd still want a dog after a day with people. Lol, I'm not a people person. They give me anxieties. It's easier with the animals or talking on the internet. But yeah, we all have our own limits. For me it's people, or rather, people I'm not comfortable with. I assume. Haven't met yet anyone I would be comfortable with, lol.

Dogs actually count as people for me, for socializing purposes! If I am too tired for people, I am too tired for a dog. And vice versa. Not sure where cats fall on that line, because they aren't so demanding of attention so I don't think they've ever tried to interact with me when I was tired out already.

XD Fair enough. I've "met" cats that are either very antisocial (or then they just hate me. My own cat was like that, wild little thing. She was such a mean bitch) or very affectionate and won't leave me alone. I'm just glad I haven't met yet any angry dogs personally (although one dog did bite my little finger when I was a kid, but it wasn't anything serious and like the dog was actually attacking me or anything. I probably even deserved it, lol), although I know full well there are those just as much as those "bitchy nasty" cats. Huh, kind of like with people eh? Lol.
