Dude, yeah, if I was under 8, I'd definitely be terrified.

I actually never heard of the cannibalistic version, wow. I mean, Snow White's step-mother wanting to cut out her heart is one thing, but...yikes.

*sobs* I was not! But you know, returning here, I was able to stalk the old threads, so I saw art of Ehlenia in her cloak-disguise, and I read the text for it --you've sure got users here who are dedicated and good at keeping record if these things. XD

As is, I'm slowly buying all of last year's event items as they are being sold on the Market. *thumbs up* To think I used to want to get every single item on here... Now I'm just going with what I can afford when they're being sold. Still, got a good-sized wardrobe regardless!

Ah, I was wondering why the sleeping beauty version I remember from my childhood didn't have the rape even though the other fairy tales from my book were the original, dark versions. Thanks for figuring that out and explaining it, Firn!
I've grown up with the cutting off toes, stepmother dancing in glowing hot shoes etc. versions as well, but somehow I never found them particularly disturbing. Maybe my parents introduced me to them when I was a little older? I can't remember, really.
I'm actually wondering now if german kids today still get to read the originals right away or if modern parents think they're too dark and have some more kid-friendly versions now.

I am glad some users keep good track of the events, I didn't know that.

I really hope no one tries to really get every item here. That must be really difficult. Even I only get the items I will most likely wear for my avatar, even though I could get them all. But there are just some items, mostly some colors, i would never wear.

Chrizine, I am actually not sure whether they still read them these days, but I rather don't think so. There are so many modern and "cute" stories out there and there are also lots of stories that have the intention of teaching good behaviour, but do it in a rather nice way instead of the "If you don't behave, someone will cook you and eat you"-way.

@Firn: Yep! It's somewhere in the chat forum (around the winter season of last year, I believe), if you're curious. I was trying to get money by voting on old polls and came across it. *thumbs up* Have been necro-ing a thread or two in the process as well, since they had interesting topics I wanted to continue to discuss.

Aha, but Firn, before I went off my first hiatus, I came really close! It was kinda exciting, because both Chaos and I were chasing after them like crazy; we were like collecting rivals! XD It was an adventure --an impossibly difficult adventure. If you could take a peek at my wardrobe right now, you could see that I have so many old items. And I remember where I got a lot of them from too. It fills me with fondness when I see them and remember, "Oh, I got this because we were fans of Plastic Tree and one of their band members drew some art" or "I cut it really close at this auction but managed to get a precious item" or "I spent so much to trade for this item I wanted so badly".

I don't know; having the rare stuff makes me happy. Maybe because it's even more difficult to obtain nice things in real life, but if you work hard enough, you might manage to get it here. XD Also, I like rolling in digital wealth. *facehands*

Yeeaaah, there are definitely colors here (like cyber yellow) that I would probably avoid wearing. But when I see someone else get creative with it and pull off a good avvie, it's kinda nice. People here can get really creative with their combos. I'm constantly impressed by the entries in the avatar contest corner. XD Oh, and the official contest as well, of course!

I once had the distant dream of collecting all hair, lips, eyes, and skins. Quickly realised I couldn't even afford to get all TT ones let alone everything on the site XD There are still so many things in my wishlist though.

You're probably right Firn. There's so many children's books, some of them are really great. I should ask my sister sometime whether she is reading the old fairytales to my nieces at all.

Hm, a favourite... I think I have to go with Rapunzel, simply because I always adored her hair :D You have no idea how happy I was when after watching tangled with my nieces they said I look like a rapunzel, too :D
But there was also one in my fairy tale book about some enchanted princess living on a glass mountain and a young man who catches her horse and manages to ride up on it and disenchants her or something. I can't recall what it was called, but I liked it a lot. Probably also because it had a really pretty illustration of the mountain and the horse :D

Oh, nice! I think Gail Carson Levine wrote a retelling of the princess who lives on a glass mountain, but it was a short story.

I don't know if I have a favorite, to be honest. I have favorite versions of fairy tales, but not a favorite fairy tale in and of itself per se.

I think my favorite fairy tale is the Little Mermaid. Though, of course, in the original the prince marries the human princess and the little mermaid dissolves into sea foam. :qsweat:
But I had a really pretty children book with amazing drawings in it. I think that was why I liked it, despite the sad story. And at least it was just sad, and not gross, like Grimm Fairy tales.

I tried to google for the glass mountain story while I was writing that last post, but I found countless different versions, none of them was quite like the one I remember. There were multiple ones that had elements of it though. I distinctly remember the horse being important and I found one that had horses, but it had three and it was not said that they were the princesses. From what I recall, the horse had a pretty active role in going down into the world and bringing back a guy for its princess :D Even though the guy did catch the horse when it was snacking on his fields or something. That was like the story I just found. But the one I just found was interesting as well, kind of an inverse Cinderella story with the guy being mocked by his brothers and getting the three horses (and shiny armour to go with them) and appearing three days in a row but always mysteriously disappearing before it's in the end revealed that he was the mysterious knight :D (I'd link it, but I already closed the page and it was in german anyway)

What was the version of the glass mountain you know like, Mikael?

Funny, I think the little mermaid is actually one of the few fairy tales where I didn't know the original before the disney movie. I did love the movie though, it was one of the few I had a VHS of (oh god, I'm old :D) and I would watch it a lot.
Also, the drawings that go with the tales in children's books are pretty important for what we end up liking it seems :) I can still see a lot of the pictures in my head, even where I don't recall the stories exactly anymore.
