Ah no, haven't been into anime much lately.

I tend to be really put off when it comes to fan service (which is why I can't watch Yuri on Ice or Free). I might bear it (though I still cringe) if it's an anime I'm already invested in, but too much fanservice cheapens the characters to me. (Makes me feel like they're selling you eye candy and sex appeal.)

Oddly I didn't find yuri on ice that fanservice-y.

A lot of the anime for guys, as in showing lots of big boobed women/female teens are more fanservice-y than Yuri on ice. Such as High school DD, like that's a extreme but still.


A less extreme is uh this one https://myanimelist.net/anime/28121/Dun ... u_Darou_ka it's got some fan service but not overly. At least like I could watch it and enjoy it. Unlike DD which I didn't watch much of.

As for yuri on ice, tbh the most fan service bits are Vicktor getting naked but us not seeing anything besides his butt and chest. And the cute scenes between him and yuri.

I think that swimming one, Free! would be more fan service-y. I haven't seen that one yet.

That said these are just my thoughts.

The scene where the two main characters met while one was bathing in the hot springs was a little much for me. Since it was early on, I assumed that tone of fan service is what was being set for the series and it lost its appeal to me as a sports anime.

I agree that a lot of fan service in anime caters to the male audience (boobs and butts and panty flashes), which I find tasteless as well. One may occur more than the other, I dislike objectifying characters, regardless of their gender. This is also why I'm reluctant to get into Shokugeki no Souma, even though my friends all tell me it's a good anime.

My cousin tells me that fan service occurs in anime because of its pull, so even if the creator wanted to write a great story filled with well-rounded characters, sometimes they are pressed to include fan service because that's what sells. So basically, a series like that (we were talking about Log Horizon as an example) is actually catering to two audiences: one who is drawn to it because of fan service and their brand of romance, and one who enjoys the complex plot and world building.

I can see it also in One Piece, but in this case, the author also personally enjoys fan service. *facehands* Well, at least Oda is having fun at his job. XD;
