Me too! :)

Hm, why did you go dairy-free exactly? If it's about the lactose, a lot of hard cheeses are naturally free of it (something about their ripening does that). If you do it for no-animal-product reasons though, then sadly you will have to live with the replacements I suppose. Are they any good? I don't think I've ever had vegan cheese replacements.

It's for health reasons. Problem is I'm also vegetarian already, and a lot of hard cheeses contain rennet ^^

Vegan cheese is growing on me a lot. They've had some big breakthroughs over the last few years, really. We have some grated cheese which melts quite nicely on pizza, as well as a few different blocks of cheese which are kind of like Wensleydale in texture but have all different flavours. There's a cheddar with caramelised onion one that I love. Also we've had this vegan halloumi which is amazing - it's not really like halloumi but it's kind of almost marshmallowy, with this slightly firm exterior and then a lovely melty, squishy inside when you fry it.

As for chocolate... eh. I've just been sticking to dairy-free dark chocolate. Or kind of - I did have a load of "real" chocolate to finish off :qoops:

That doesn't sound too bad :) Cheddar with caramelised onion sounds tasty...

Yeah, I would think for chocolate it should be easier? Since milk is not THE defining ingredient of it, that's the cocoa. So one should be able to produce vegan chocolate, not only dark ones but also ones more like milk chocolate by using something like almond milk or the like?

It's the texture that tends to be off, I think. And it always tastes a little fake. Even though dark chocolate is just dark chocolate and it tastes like chocolate, for some reason it goes weird when you add non-dairy milk.

I'm sure someone will figure it out soon. I've had homemade vegan chocolate that tasted pretty good, but nothing on the commercial side yet.

With all the vegan food popping up lately, it's probably just a matter of time until they manage some proper vegan chocolate.

I've read already propably a year ago that scientist suceeded in making a "real" vegan milk, so milk from milk proteins that is actual milk, but does not come from animals. The article said that it was supposed to hit the market in 1018 and that it would not be more expensive than common milk, but somehow even healthier. I have not heard anything of it ever since, so I am not sure what happened with it, but "vegan" chocolate (and cheese) is coming in the future for sure!
At least, if you define "vegan" as a person who does not eat or use any animal products, as the milk doesn't come from animals.
If you want to live dairy free because of health reasons like lactose intolerance, that won't really help (Though lactose-free milk has been around for ages and it even tastes better than milk with lactose in my opinion).

EDIT: There are plenty of articles about it, like this:
https://www.sciencealert.com/this-new-d ... s-required
This one is even from 1016 and says they hoped to release it next year, which would have been 2017. But I am not aware such diary products exist, at least not in germany. But I am sure hoping they will come one day.

For me lactose-free milk tastes like burned milk. But regular milk isn't tasty either. I really do like soy milk though.

Really? :mcgasp: Lactose free milk actually just tastes sweeter than milk with lactose. The lactose is broken down into its component sugars, glucose and galactose and thus it tastes sweeter as it contains a different kind of sugar. I can't taste any other difference. :mcheh: Always prefered the lactose free version and on top if it I can give it to my cats instead of buying expensive "cat milk".
(Though I must say, I have no cue how burned milk tastes like, so I lack comparison)
