It's not always the case that you either feed the poor and starve yourself or you don't feed them and get guilty celebrations :') For example I just don't trust the homeless people. 99% cases they want money for alcohol. Some are honest and will tell you that straight forward. And usually that honesty touches people and they give their money. Others will lie about their intent. If Ash gets asked for money, he offers to actually buy food, and usually the homeless person doesn't take the offer. I once got asked for money, but the man didn't smell of alcohol and was sounding like a normal, eloquent person, so I gave him some cash I had on me. Then I facepalmed, because I had an untouched sandwich in my purse and could've given him that as well... I just forgot to death about it until I was very close to home...

The difference between that man and any other hobo to me was, he didn't repulse me. Don't get me wrong, I really pity the homeless, but in most cases it was their life choices that led them to that state. They make the choice to not go to shelters for homeless. It's tragic.
You can also be generous to other people, the ones around you. It doesn't have to be a person in special need, like a homeless or an orphan.
Which reminds me, I could join the "Christmas gifts for the needy" action at work...
