The new friends system is now in place.

You can find a "manage friends" link in your account settings page; there are also quicklinks in the "Community" and "My Account" sections of the dropdown menu.

To add a friend, you can either search for users' names on the Manage friends page, or use the quick link on their profile.

On the profile page of other users, you can see the friendship state on the right side of their avatar, with a quick link to change the state.

To become friends with a user, you have to send a friend request, which the other can confirm or decline. Once confirmed, the connection works both ways, so both users will have the other on their profile page (if the "show friendlist" option is active) and on their friends management page.

There are important differences between the list on your profile and the friends management page:
On the profile, the incoming friend requests and sent friend request lists are visible only on your own profile page.
The "other states" list (containing friend requests you declined, your requests that were declined, and ended friendships) appears only on the friends management page.
On the friends management page, all avatars link to the "change state" page, where on the profile page the friends' avatars link to their profiles.

[UPDATE]

As promised, the online/offline friends list is back. It's not on the UCP menu as it used to be, however, but placed under the info box on the right side of the page.
