Lol, that makes sense  At least I know it might get translated further. Although I still would like to try and read a book in English :mcblush:

if you are looking for an easy-to-read book, I can recommend Orconomics by J. Zachary Pike. one of my favorites! I didn't need to consult a dictionary at all while reading it, and not because I'm just too lazy. it's written in a very easy language, yet conveys everything you need: there's dynamics, there's the visual, etc. it plays a lot with the gaming culture but you don't need to be a gamer to understand the world and what's going on. other than that I'd say, just pick up a book. if you think you're missing out on something, you can find it in translation. but I never did so. even when reading books where I had to look up every 5th word, I never wanted to just switch to another language. I think if you can read the original, it's a huge advantage. this way you know it's what the author really wrote, and not what's left in the translation

I guess I'm just looking for anything I'd be interested in at this point XD Thanks for the recommendation, I'll surely check it out :mcglee:
I also want to explore the English writing, so far I've only been sitting in fan fiction and that's not really reliable :mclaugh:

oh I don't know. there is a problem with fanfics that they're not edited, or some aren't even proofread. but I've encountered published books with mistakes and typos, it looked like they were hardly edited too. like with published literature, you can find those written with good or bad grammar and spelling, and in easy or more complicated language, so I don't think fanfiction is a bad idea. if you're reading it in English, to me it looks like you can read published books too :) maybe it feels like a different level to you. so you just need to start ;)

The problem with fanfiction is, many people make such terrible mistakes, my eyes bleed when I read it x.x I can handle typos, although I've been called the grammar police ;>///> They happen even in published books, as you pointed out, so that's no biggie. It's just that I'm not sure about the writing style, is it proper, is it alright to do this or that... I'm trying to figure out whether I should write my original stuff in Polish or in English, because I've been sitting in the English-speaking world for so long, and I've been reading and writing in English so much that I'm afraid I can't even write in my native tongue, even all the dialogues come to me in English :mcargh: It's perplexing... and kind of embarrassing.
So I'v ecome to a point where I write part of my own stuff in Polish and then switch to English and so on... :mcsweat:

memoriam wrote:@Merry: Tbh, I've never tried reading a book in English. I can handle articles and such, but never got cocky enough to actually read a novel or smthn in English. I got my hands on "Angels and Demons" once (mom found it), so I had an opportunity, but there was too many words from scientific world int he beginning and I got discouraged :mcheh: That was several years ago tho...
So that's why... I wonder if I would be able to understand things without looking into the dictionary too often :mcblush:

@Alice: Oh, that's nice to know! I couldn't find info anywhere, thank you! not that I looked too thoroughly... >///<
Yeah, I guess Dan Brown is kind of hard to start with. My first English books were Harry Potter. They were very doable - and amazing, as we all know! I've quit reading Dutch books ever since, so I find it hard to tell which books are good to begin with. But I do know that reading in another language may seem more daunting than it actually is. I just bought Harry Potter in French, for example. I don't speak French well, but it's still fairly easy to understand, and it really helps me to get a bit of a grasp on the language. But your English already seems to be great, so what's keeping ya? :qcute:

@memoriam: oh there are two things to what you're saying. first, the more you're reading, the more defined taste you're developing. of course it's beneficial to read "good" writing, but you'll only know it's good if you read enough to see what you like and what you don't. in this regard, no reading can harm you, only benefit :)
(that's how I convince myself to finish books I don't like: I can learn from these authors' mistakes if I pay attention and analyze why I don't like these books)

secondly, the more you're reading and writing, the stronger you're developing your writing style(s), or voice(s). so you've read your whole life and have developed standards: you like this, you don't like that. you will only live up to your own standards if you practice writing a lot.

it's important to read in a language you want to write in, but if you live in the country of your native language, you'll hardly ever be unable to write in it. you'll need to practice, though, whether you want to write in your native language or a foreign one.

sad thing here is that I know I'll never write as good in any language, as in my native one. but this doesn't have to hold true for everyone :)

@Merry: same, I only read in anything other than english if english is not the original language of the book. if it's a translation anyway, I'd rather have it in my native language because that'd just go faster and with less effort. but if the original is a language I speak, I'll try to find it

Yep, same here! If it's a translation of a language I don't speak, I'll get it in English. But if I really love the book, I'll get it in more languages. I'll buy Harry Potter and Temeraire in any language :mcheh:

Speaking of books in other languages, I started playing witcher 3 yesterday and because I know it's based on the witcher books I want to possibly try reading them.

Said books are originally in Polish.
