Yeah, it takes them a while to read and get in touch with the author :mclaugh: But after that it went pretty smoothly!

Both proofreaders and editors (one person could be doing both jobs on two different projects, for example). Sometimes the publisher prefers to have everyone on site so they could communicate with each other better. But I find e-mails better. At least I can focus on the reading, like you said. I've already worked in an open space and thanks, but no thanks. I could not focus on anything and everything was pissing me off :mclaugh:
Head of editors, sure, they would need to meet with the client/author and it's probably easier for them to coordinate the works when everyone is on site. Probably that's why some publishers require that.

I am a teacher, so must of my work is done on site of course.
But when I need some concentration (grading tests for example) I always do it at home, usually late at night when the son is already in bed.
No interruptions thank you!

I can hardly read - for pleasure - when there are other people around, much less notice patterns and suggest improvements.
I think your line of work would be hard for a person like me if I had to do it in a open space.

I think it's a downside to teaching, that you have to take overtime at home to grade tests, prepare the lessons etc. It's like two jobs. At least it seems so to me. Teachers here often strike about their salaries :mcheh:

It's kind of a different reading for pleasure versus for work, but either way, I like to read in quiet places or with good headphones on. And I hate when people loom over my shoulder, which might happen in an office job. I get too nervous. even when my mom gets nosy and asks me to show her what I'm doing I'm already annoyed that she's looking inside my computer XD

Yes, it's a downside, but all jobs have downsides and at least in this case we knew what we were signing for.
At least we get plenty of holidays so I don't have any complaint in that sense.

I'm the kind of person who looms over others.
Curiosity killed the cat, but I haven't learned any better yet ^^;

That's true. Long holidays are great.

Nooo, that's not good, Amura, don't do this to people XD
But I'm shy and an introvert, maybe someone doesn't mind but I need my space. And my mom often gets in my breathing space when she looms over me...

But one looms over introverts.
Cause extroverts are already telling you all about what they are doing, there is no point in looming over them xD

I know, I know. I do this to my husband sometimes, and it annoys him so much. But it's unconcious. v_v

XD

Yeah, I get it. I just wish my mom would stop blocking my swivel chair when she does that. Rocking on it calms me down when she annoys me, and she take that away, too! XD

Sanssouci wrote:I finished reading Child of the Grove (Wizard of the Grove #1) by Tanya Huff. I haven't been reading much lately, and I also wasn't crazy about it, so it took me a long time to finish. I liked it just barely enough to read the next book, so I started The Last Wizard (Wizard of the Grove #2). Luckily it's just the two books.
I admit, when it comes to Tanya Huff, I much prefer her Valor series, and the Enchantment Emporium trio. They're much more tightly edited than the Wizard of the Grove duology.
The one I keep thinking I'll get rid of and then keeping because it makes me laugh so much was the 2-in-1 collection "Stealing Magic" with her most powerful -and-lazy Wizard in the World, and the best thief in the city. It's actually all short stories, two collections around those two characters, and they are mostly just so funny. She spoofs so well around all the old tropes.
Normally I'm not fond of short stories, but those ones are gems.

Just gonna post a little update on my challenge.
I finished the Discoworld book - one of those in the "long waiting time" list - and now I'm gonna focus on the other book I had started.
The one of therapeutical feminism.
It's not bad, but so far it feels more like a self-help book than a feminist essay.

So how far have you gotten on the Discworld re-read now, Amura?
